BEREA — The No. 4 ranked Ohio Northern softball team used great pitching to extend its winning streak to 24 straight games with a 5-1, 15-0 double header sweep at Baldwin-Wallace at the Cuyahoga Country Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Polar Bears improve to 27-1 overall and 10-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 14-13 overall and 4-6 in the OAC.
In game one, sophomore pitcher Maggie Molnar improved her record to 10-0 by giving up one run on two hits while striking out three in the complete game victory.
Molnar leads the team with a 1.84 ERA while opponents are only hitting .249 against her.
Freshman Chrissy Rankin broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning as she drove in senior All-American Tina Mangola with a single.
Sophomore Katie Cretin then blasted a two RBI double to right center that pushed Northern's lead to 4-1.
The Polar Bears gained another run in the top of the 5th when sophomore Jackie Mangola scored on a fielding error to give Northern a 5-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Game two featured sophomore Lauren Hurd pitching a shutout, allowing five hits while striking out four, to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Sophomore Kimi Blewitt led Northern offensively as she went 3-4 with four RBIs.
Northern scored in all five innings, including two five-run innings in the second and third, and two two-run innings in the fourth and fifth to end the game.
Blewitt launched a solo home run in the top of the fourth to give her a team leading nine home runs on the season.
Sophomore Cassie Gaye went 2-3 with three RBI's and a walk.
The Polar Bears look to improve their win streak on Wednesday at 3:30 as they travel to Otterbein for an OAC doubleheader.
