No. 16 Men's Swimming & Diving clinches share of sixth consecutive OAC Regular Season title with 226.5-67.5 victory over Mount Union

By: Jacob Schwerer

ADA — Senior Michael Schultz and junior Drew Keriazes lead the Ohio Northern Men's swimming and dive team to a 226.5-67.5 victory over Ohio Athletic Conference foe Mount Union Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears remained undefeated and improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the OAC, while Mount Union falls to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC

The victory clinches at least a share of the 2011-12 OAC Regular Season title, marking the sixth consecutive year that the Polar Bears have won the crown.

Schultz won the 1000 freestyle, the 500 freestyle and the 100 freestyle with times of 10:00.63, 4:55.63 and 48.92 respectively.

He also helped the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Schultz, sophomores John Beaschler and Christian Garlock and senior Anders Samuelson win first with a time of 3:18.67.

Keriazes won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley with times of 1:00.64, 2:14.23 and 2:01.38 respectively.

Keriazes also helped the 400 medley relay team take a first place finish with a time of 3:36.88. That team consisted of Keriazes, Samuelson, sophomore Jordan Breitigam and freshman Brain Heilbronner.

Breitigam won the 100 and 200 butterfly with times of 52.43 and 1:55.41 respectively.

Garlock won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.48 and freshman Chris Hoffman won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.06.

Junior Albert Schmidt won the 1-meter diving with 239.47 points and the 3-meter diving with 234.07 points.

Head coach Peggy Ewald said she was very pleased with the results of the meet. "It was a good opportunity to see where we were at after our training week in Florida. And OAC meets are always very exciting."

The Polar Bears look to remain undefeated as they take on top-ranked Kenyon on Friday in Gambier.
