Dean, Barker highlight strong showing by Men’s Outdoor Track and Field at Tiffelberg Open

TIFFIN — Sophomores Jordan Dean (Euclid/Villa Angela Saint Joseph) and Tyrese Barker (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) highlighted a strong showing from the Ohio Northern men's outdoor track and field team at the Tiffelberg Open on Saturday at Hoernemann Stadium.
The Polar Bears posted 21 top-10 finishes in the meet, which was not team scored.
Dean won the 400 meters with a time of :48.55 and was second in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of :21.52, which ranks second all-time at ONU.
Barker won the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of :15.57, which ranks ninth all-time at ONU. He added a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.72 meters and was ninth in the 200 meters with a time of :23.04.
Junior Trey Myers (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) and freshman Nathan Carnevale (Beavercreek/Carroll) made it four first-place finishes for the Polar Bears on the day.
Myers won the 800 meters in 1:58.40, and Carnevale won the triple jump with a mark of 11.00 meters.
Northern had five other top-three finishes.
Freshman James Shorter (Lima/Perry) was second in the 110-meter hurdles in :16.51, junior Jared Swartz (Columbia Station/Columbia) was second in the 5,000 meters in 15:30.34, and the 4x400 relay team of Myers, senior Vini Souza (Spencerville), junior David Gross (Prospect/Pleasant Local) and freshman Ben Zimmerer (Liberty Township/Lakota West) was second in 3:26.13.
Sophomore Ryan Massie (Beavercreek) was third in the 1,500 meters in 4:04.30, and sophomore Landon Remmert (Marengo/Highland) was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.31.
The Polar Bears rounded out the day with nine additional top-10 finishes.
Zimmerer was sixth in the 400 meters in :52.19, sophomore Justin Pate (Vincent/Warren) finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:07.50, and junior Tommy Vetrovsky (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) was sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.78 meters.
Gross finished ninth in the 400 meters in :52.95, junior Brandon Wise (Goshen, Ind./Concord) was ninth in the long jump with a mark of 6.15 meters, freshman Evan Gomez (Farmington, N.M.) was ninth in the discus throw with a mark of 39.29 meters, and senior Brooks Blakeley (Versailles) was 10th in the 1,500 meters in 4:11.26.
The team of sophomore Ross Schlatter (Curtice/Genoa) and freshmen Riley Beasley (Palatine, Ill.), Solomon Lumb (Cincinnati/Sycamore) and Isaac Dotson (Avon Lake) was fifth in the 4x400 relay in 3:40.10, and the team of senior Alan Dravenstott (Medina), junior Ian Ackenhausen (Xenia/Legacy Christian Academy) and sophomores Trent Babcock (Painesville/Riverside) and Bo Little (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) were seventh in 3:43.92.
The pole vault and javelin throw events were not held.
Four ONU student-athletes competed in the Washington (Mo.) Distance Carnival on Friday and Saturday at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.
Sophomore Trey Masterson (Tiffin/Hopewell-Loudon) was 10th in the 5,000 meters in a personal-best 14:25.46, which ranks third all-time at ONU.
Senior Breydan Hann (Wooster) finished 17th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:42.91.
Junior Kyle Roth (Rockford/Parkway) was 57th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:43.12, and junior Aaron Guzman (Lebanon) was 64th in Friday's portion of the 5,000 meters in 16:13.88.
The Polar Bears return to action on Saturday at the Manchester (Ind.) Invitational.
