Baseball splits doubleheader with Calvin (Mich.) losing game one 11-10 and winning game two 8-0

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Ohio Northern split a baseball double header with Calvin (Mich.) on Friday, winning the nightcap 8-0 after falling in the opener 11-10.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (9-3 Overall), Calvin (Mich.) (7-7 Overall).
- Venue: Lake Myrtle #8 - Aubrundale, Fla.
Game One - L, 10-11
- Calvin scored three runs in the top of the first, but ONU responded with five runs of own, capped by a 3-run home run by senior Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay).
- The Knights tied the game at 5-all in the third, but Stechschulte once again answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double to make it 6-5.
- Junior Kyler Lapp (Hall, Ill.) made it a 9-8 game with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth.
- Lapp and senior Robbie Reed (Goshen, Ky./Trinity) scored on a Knight error in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 10-10
- Calvin scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh and held on in the bottom of the frame to pick up the victory.
- Calvin got a homer in the sixth to push the lead to 10-8, but tied the game in the bottom half of the inning at 10-10.
- The knights got the last laugh as they scored in the top of the seventh which would end up being the winning run.
- CU out-hit ONU 15-9.
Game Two
- freshman Carson Stevens (Wyoming) Stevens and Lapp hit run-scoring singles in the 2nd inning, with freshman Carson Stevens (Wyoming) getting 1 RBI and Lapp knocking in 2 to give ONU a 3-0 lead.
- With 2 outs and the bases loaded in the 4th inning, Russ launched a grand slam to give the Polar Bears a 7-0 lead.
- Sophomore Charlie Oakleaf (New Albany) brought in another run on a sacrifice bunt, to grow the lead to 8-0.
- Sophomore Jarrett Haan (Findlay/Liberty-Benton) picked up the win for Northern, going 5.0 innings and not allowing a single run.
Notables
- Stechschulte lead the Polar Bears through both games offensively going 3-6 at plate with 4 RBIs including a 3-run home run.
- Russ went 3-7 and drove in 5 RBIs inclduing the grand slam.
- Lapp went 4-6 at the plate with 2 RBIs including a solo home run.
- The Polar Bears improve to 6-3 on their 12-game spring break trip.
- Ohio Northern now trails in the series 2-1 all-time with the Saints.
- Freshman Carson Stevens (Wyoming) leads the team this season with a .475 batting average, 12 runs scored, 20 base hits and two home runs.
