NEW CONCORD - The Ohio Northern volleyball team went 2-0 Friday in the opening round of the OAC/HCAC Challenge defeating Transylvania, Ky. 25-15, 25-17, 25-13 and Hanover, Ind. 25-20, 25-11, 25-13 hosted by Muskingum University.
The Polar Bears move to 11-4 overall, while Transylvania, Ky. falls to 9-3 and Hanover, Ind. 9-6.
Junior Claire Heitkamp led the Polar Bears on day 1, hitting a game-high .600 with nine kills in the ONU victory over Transylvania and hit a team-high .438 in the win against Hanover.
In the Polar Bears opening match with Transylvania, Northern hit an impressive .346, recording 43 kills.
Sophomore Haley Potters also posted a strong performance, hitting .500 and tieing a team-high nine kills.
Northern started out slow in game two but another dominate performance by Heitkamp led to the ONU 25-20, 25-11, and 25-13 victory.
The Polar Bears out hit Hanover in the contest recording 38 kills, while the Panthers recorded 33.
Junior Ashley Borchers added a game-high 28 assists.
Northern returns to action Saturday, in day two of the OAC/HCAC Challenge, where they will face-off with Mt. St. Joseph at 11:30 am, followed by Defiance at 3:30 pm.
