HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Ohio Northern women's tennis team opened its 2017 Spring Break trip with a 9-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan and an 8-1 loss to Wilkes (Pa.), on Sunday.
The Polar Bears are 9-2 on the season, while the Prairie Wolves fall to 2-11 and the defending MAC Freedom Conference champion Colonels improve to 7-0.
Sophomore Ashley Ochsenhirt (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) led ONU with a 3-1 record on the day.
She went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and combined with freshman Ola Latala (Grosse Isle, Mich.) to go 1-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Northern swept all six singles courts and all three doubles courts a the win over NWU.
Latala won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, junior Christina Corbean (Dayton/Oakwood) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, freshman Kaleigh Cummins (Springfield/Northeastern) won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4, freshman Mackenzie Wills (Ada) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and freshman Katherine Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
In doubles, Corbean and senior Brittany Toney (Greenwood, Ind.) won 8-5 at No. 1, Ochsenhirt and Latala won 8-0 at No. 2 and Wills and Cummins won 8-0 at No. 3.
Ochsenhirt posted ONU's lone court win against Wilkes with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory at No. 1 singles.
The Polar Bears will play again on Monday with a 8:30 am match against Sweet Briar (Va.)
