ADA — Freshman Alex Hoeffel (Continental) scored in the 52nd minute to lead the Black team to a 1-0 victory over the Orange team in the third match of the Polar Bear Cup women's soccer series on a chilly Thursday night at Kerscher Stadium.
Hoeffel sent a nifty pass to sophomore Lauren Naso (Grosse Ile, Mich.) on the right wing, who then sent a crossing pass back into the box where Hoeffel redirected it into the goal from 10 meters away for the 70-minute match's lone goal.
Junior Kristy Catrine (Springboro) and freshman Taylor Pritchett (Dayton/Northmont) combined for the shutout in goal for the Black squad.
Black was in control throughout the match, finishing with a 17-5 advantage in shots and a 9-3 lead in shots on goal.
Freshman Reanna Laurell (Strongsville) had eight saves in goal for the White team.
After three of the five matches of the polar Bear Cup series, seven players lead the individual standings with 15 points each.
Hoeffel, Catrine, Naso, junior Tara Morris (Monroe), senior Anne Major (Okemos, Mich.), Bri Straus (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and freshman Kylie Brown (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern Central) have been on the winning team in all three matches and all have 15 points.
Senior Siena Ward (Newport Beach, Cal./Newport Harbor) and freshman Kate Helton (Beavercreek) have 11 points each and sophomore Hailey McGuire (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and senior Jenna Fuller (Countryside, Ill./Lyons Township) have 109 points each.
The match was the third in a series of five intrasquad matches on Thursdays in October for the ONU women's soccer program.
Each player on the winning team will receive three points and each player will receive a point for each goal its team scores during the match each week.
