Seniors Gavin Layman and Cael Vanderhorst named Third Team Academic All-America by College Sports Communicators

ADA — Ohio Northern seniors Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) and Cael Vanderhorst (Covington) were named Third Team Academic All-America At-Large Team by College Sports Communicators.
Layman and Vanderhorst both compete in wrestling at Ohio Northern.
To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 GPA and met the participation requirements of their respective sports.
In lacrosse, student/athletes must have either played in at least 90 percent of his team's competitions or started 66 percent of them. In wrestling and golf, the student/athlete must have competed in at least 70 percent of the team's scoring events.
The CSC's at-large sports include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Layman is now a two-time Academic All-America Third Team selection. He is also a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier, three-time All-OAC honoree and a three-time Academic All-OAC selection.
This season, he went 30-9 with 5 pins at 197 pounds. He is 124-53 overall in four seasons at ONU.
Layman is majoring in computer science.
Vanderhorst was named First Team All-OAC and qualified for the NCAA III Championships this season.
He had a 29-11 record with 9 pins this season. In his career, he is 77-26 overall with 24 pins.
Vanderhorst is majoring in mechanical engineering.
Vanderhorst is the fourth Ohio Northern wrestler to earn Academic All-America honors, joining Layman (2024,25), Luke Miller (2010,11) and Cody Lovejoy (2013,14,15) on that list.
