ADA — The Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team tied its best start in school history after posting a 17-4 victory over NCAA Division II foe West Virginia Wesleyan on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears are off to a 3-0 start, tying the start in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season.
Freshman Rylie Kocik (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored five goals, senior Meredith Miller (Noblesville, Ind.) also had a hat trick with three goals for the third consecutive game and freshmen Emma Hoersten (Hilliard/Davidson) and Elena Martin (Canfield) also had three goal hat tricks to lead Ohio Northern.
The Bobcats (0-5) got two goals from Reveena Navalgund.
Northern raced to an 8-0 lead just 10:53 into the contest.
The lead was 9-1 after the first period and 13-2 at halftime.
With the NCAA-mandated running clock in play after ONU led by 10 goals late in the second quarter, the second half was a low-scoring affair as the hosts emptied the bench and played all 29 healthy players.
WVWU only had 12 available players, and after their 12-5 loss at Tiffin the day before, the visitors played undermanned.
Senior Amanda Wells (Mason) had six draw controls, senior Lacry Wernoch (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) and sophomore Mia Andrews-Pope (Centerville/Chaminade-Julienne) had five ground balls each and sophomore Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) had a game-high three assists for Ohio Northern.
Ohio Northern out-shot West Virginia Wesleyan 45-12 and enjoyed a 28-9 advantage in ground balls.
The Polar Bears will pley thei fourth game of their 5-game season-opening homestand on Wednesday at 7 pm with a home contest against Adrian (Mich.)
