Alissa Stahler’s career-high 20 points spurs Women’s Basketball to rout of Capital

COLUMBUS — Senior Alissa Stahler (Lima/Shawnee) scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 66-37 victory over Capital on Saturday afternoon at Capital Center Performance Arena.
Ohio Northern improves to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Capital falls to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the OAC.
Stahler added eight rebounds, two blocks and one steal to her stat line.
Junior Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points, a game-high nine rebounds, three assists and one steal. Her nine rebounds tied a career high.
Senior Kate Iliff (Lorain/Steele) and freshman Brooke Allen (Woodville/Woodmore) added eight points apiece.
Senior Molly Palecek (Wadsworth) tallied a career-high six assists, and sophomore Kasey Knippen (Ottoville) added a career-high three steals.
Freshman Laney Murphy scored a team-high 14 points for the Comets.
Ohio Northern built a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and proceeded to outscore the Comets 22-5 in the second period to take a 36-15 lead into the halftime break.
The Polar Bears opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run courtesy of four points from Stahler and a 3-pointer from Serbin.
Stahler led the way for ONU with 14 first-half points.
ONU opened the second half with consecutive 3-pointers from Iliff and senior Jaidyn Hale (Lima/Bath) and took a 52-25 lead into the fourth quarter en route to the victory.
Ohio Northern made 24-of-59 field goals for 40.7% and was 5-of-23 from 3-point range for 21.7%, while the Comets made 15-of-51 field goals for 29.4% and were 5-of-19 from beyond the arc for 26.3%.
The Polar Bears were 13-of-17 from the foul line for 76.5% while Capital was 2-of-7 for 28.6%.
ONU out-rebounded CU by a 42-21 margin.
The Polar Bears held a 30-12 edge in points in the paint and 15-3 advantage in second-chance points.
Ohio Northern returns to action for a two-game set in the Bluffton Classic on Dec. 29-30. The Polar Bears will face St. Mary's (Ind.) on Dec. 29 and Geneva (Pa.) on Dec. 30. Both games are scheduled to start at noon.
