Strong first quarter leads Women’s Basketball over Lycoming (Pa.)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — After building a 21-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Ohio Northern women's basketball team cruised to a 75-50 victory over Lycoming (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at the Juniata Classic at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears (3-0 overall) got 14 points and seven rebounds from senior Alissa Stahler (Lima/Shawnee) and 12 points and three rebounds from senior Kate Iliff (Lorain/Steele).
Junior Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) tallied a game-high four steals.
The Warriors (0-5 overall) also finished with two double-digits scorers in Diana Rantz and Kenzie Reed, who tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Leading 6-4 in the opening quarter, ONU went on a 10-0 run to start to take control of the game.
The Polar Bears closed the first quarter with the 21-8 lead, and the teams each scored 14 points in the second period.
ONU extended its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Lycoming 24-11 en route to the 15-point victory.
Ohio Northern made 26-of-62 field goals for 41.9% and was 7-of-19 from 3-point range for 36.8%, while the Warriors made 17-of-48 field goals for 35.4% and were 6-of-20 from beyond the arc for 30%.
ONU out-rebounded Lycoming 39-33 but lost the turnover battle by a 27-16 margin.
The Polar Bears return to the court on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Ohio Wesleyan.
