ADRIAN, Mich. — No. 19-ranked Alma (Mich.) used nine unearned runs to overcome four Ohio Northern home runs and defeat ONU 10-6 in an elimination game in the 2011 NCAA Division III Adrian Regional Tournament Saturday morning at the AC Softball Field.
The Scots (35-7) advance in the loser's bracket and will face the winner of Saturday's game between Baldwin-Wallace and No. 24 Trine (Ind.) Saturday at 4 pm.
The Polar Bears end their season with a 27-14 record.
Junior All-Americans Jackie Mangola and Kimi Blewett and sophomore Meghan Anten all hit home runs and freshman Christin Miller went 3 for 4 with a double to lead the ONU offense.
Blewett drilled a pair of home runs to give her a career-high 14 on the season.
"Our offense was outstanding once again," ONU head coach Kim Burke said. "At this level, six runs and 11 hits should be enough to win an NCAA Tournament game. "We did not handle adversity well today. We committed a couple of errors and once Alma started hitting, I think we struggled tyo regain our composure.
"We had a great season and have much to be proud of, but this is disappointing," she said. "We need to learn from this experience and come back next year ready to go. I truly believe that if we play softball the way we can play it we are as good as anyone out here."
Mangola got Ohio Northern on the board in the top of the second in familiar fashion, ripping the first pitch of the inning over the right-center field fence for her school-record 21st home run of the season, giving ONU a 1-0 lead.
After throwing a 1-hit shutout in ONU's 3-0 win over No. 24 Trine (Ind.) on Thursday, junior Maggie Molnar was again dominant early, taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning.
A 1-out single in the fourth ended the bid for a no-hitter, but Molnar easily got out of the inning unscathed.
Blewett drilled a 3-run home run to dead center field in the top of the fifth to give ONU an 4-0 advantage.
Junior Lisa Light started the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the AC shortstop. Sophomore Alia Brodie blooped a single to left to put runners on first and second, setting up Blewett for her 13th home run and 62nd, 63rd and 64th RBIs of the season.
But the table would turn in the bottom of the fifth. Alma rallied with a 5-run inning, scoring only one earned run on just two hits to take a 5-4 lead. The big blow was a two-out, three-run triple to right center by Emily Ross.
Sophomore Meghan Anten got the Polar Bears back to even by ripping a 1-out home run to left field in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5. The dinger was the fourth of the season for Anten.
The Scots again took advantage of some more help from Ohio Northern to get five more unearned run in the bottom of the sixth and put the game away.
Erin Pintek led off the inning by reaching on an error, pinch-runner Camille Dittmar went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single up the middle by Erin Rhodes.
Rhodes later scored on another error by the Polar Bear infield and it was 7-5 AC. A two-out double by Ross made it a 9-5 contest and Amanda Schneider's RBI single made it 10-5.
In the top of the seventh, Blewett ripped a line drive home run that bounced off the top of the left field fence and thumped into the neighboring indoor batting cage building to pull ONU within 10-6.
