Smith and Bowsher each break previous 3,000-meter record, while Heyman flirts with 200 record for Men's Track & Field
FINDLAY - Sophomore Dan Smith and senior Alan Bowsher each ran faster than the previous 3,000-meter school record, while junior Evan Heyman nearly broke the 200-meter dash record for the Ohio Northern men's track & field team at the non scoring Northwest Ohio Invitational hosted by Findlay.
Smith is the new ONU record holder in the 3,000-meter run after winning the event in 8:46.80. Bowsher finished third in 8:48.30 to also go lower than the previous record of 8:49.84.
"We knew heading into the 3,000 that the school record would be in jeopardy," said head coach Jason Maus. "Having our best runners in the event alongside some very strong runners in the field allowed the guys to run a fast race."
Heyman finished second in the 200-meter dash in 22.54, just 0.04 seconds away from owning the ONU school record.
He began his evening by winning the 400-meter dash in 51.51, as fellow teammate Garrett Brown finished third in the event in 51.84.
Brown duplicated his third-place finish in the 400 with another in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.70 seconds.
Seniors Garrett Petty and Jacob Weyrauch and freshman Ben Ankrom also earned third-place finishes in their respective events.
Petty cleared 5-10.75 in the high jump, Weyrauch cleared 14-5.25 in the pole vault and Ankrom finished the 800-meter run in 2:00.08.
Ohio Northern will compete again next Saturday when it travels to Baldwin-Wallace for the OAC Relays.
