Joey Bechtel, Ryan Bender lead Men's Swimming & Diving on Day 2 of the OAC Championships
AKRON — Ohio Northern men's swimming & diving won five events, setting three ONU records and two OAC records on Day 2 of the 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships.
The Polar Bears lead the team standings with 220 points. John Carroll is second with 140, Mount Union is third with 96, Baldwin-Wallace is fourth with 90 and Wilmington is fifth with 35.
Junior Ryan Bender defended his title in the 400 I.M., winning the crown for the second consecutive season, finishing in 4:10.39.
Junior Joey Bechtel won his second consecutive crown in the 100 back, setting OAC and ONU records with a time of :52.78.
Sophomore Max McClary earned All-OAC kudos by finishing second in :54.01.
The Polar Bears finished 1-2-3 in the 100 fly. Sophomore Marc Anderson won his first OAC title in the event in and ONU record and an NCAA "B" Cut of :50.49.
Freshman Erik Arent earned All-OAC honors by finishing second in :52.47 and senior two-time defending OAC Champ Garret Dauch earned All-OAC kudos by finishing third in :53.02.
Junior Anders Samuelson won the 200 free out of lane 2 in an NCAA "B" Cut of 1:41.84. It was his first OAC crown and the third time he has earned All-OAC honors in the event.
Senior Casey Davis also earned All-Conference honors with a third place finish in 4:16.21.
Sophomore Andrew Keriazes earned All-OAC honors in the 100 breast for the second straight year, finishing second in :58.67.
Junior Nick Meyer and sophomore Albert Schmidt both earned All-Conference honors in the 3-meter diving event.
Meyer finished second with a score of 425.20 points and Schmidt was third with 402.00 points.
The Polar Bears got off to a quick start by winning the 200 medley relay in OAC record fashion.
The team of Bechtel, Keriazes, Anderson and freshman Christian Garlock broke the OAC and ONU records by winning in 1:34.52.
Northern wrapped up the meet with a second place finish in the 800 free relay.
Samuelson, Bender, Keriazes and Garlock earned All-OAC kudos in 7:01.87.
The Championships will conclude Saturday with the third and final day of the meet. Preliminaries begin at 11 am and the finals are slated for 5:30 pm.
