HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Freshman Steven Slagle scored three goals and had four assists and freshmen Drew Eramo scored three goals and dished out two assists to lead Ohio Northern to a 14-5 men's lacrosse victory at Houghton (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon at Burke Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 4-1 in their inaugural season, while the Highlanders fall to 0-4.
Freshman Lucas Blaszyk had two goals and three assists and freshman Mitch Groves also scored twice and added an assist for three points for ONU.
The Polar Bears took control of the game in the third quarter, out-scoring HU 4-0 to take an 8-3 lead.
Northern then scored six more goals in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
Ohio Northern out-shot Houghton 60-17 and won the turnover battle 29-17.
Trailing 1-0, ONU scored four consecutive goals over a 6:36 span of the first and second quarters to go up 4-1 with 9:55 left before intermission.
Austin Andryshak scored twice for the Highlanders in the final 5:40 of the half to pull the hosts within 4-3 at halftime.
Groves scored a man-up goal 3:18 into the third quarter to get the momentum back on the Polar Bears' side.
Blaszyk and Slagle then scored goals just 16 seconds apart to make it 7-3 with 10:19 to play in the third.
HU scored with 12:12 left in the game to pull within 8-4, but ONU would rattle off the game's next five goals to take a commanding 13-4 lead with 5:10 remaining.
Freshman Bryce Bouman had five saves and allowed only four goals in 54 minutes of action in goal for Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday with a 1 pm game at Kalamazoo (Mich.)
