Balanced attack in 72-67 win over Hood leads Men’s Basketball to Days Inn Tournament Championship
GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Four players scored in double figures to lead the Ohio Northern men's basketball team to a 72-67 victory over Hood (Md.) in the finals of the Days Inn Championship game on Saturday evening at Bream Gymnasium.
Additionally, sophomore Brandon Rushton was named Tournament MVP, while senior Scott Schnelle was named All-Tournament.
Rushton led Northern in scoring for the second straight game with 16 points and Schnelle chipped in 10 against the Blazers.
Sophomore Dominique Royal added 12 points and sophomore Jared Horstman tallied 11.
Hood (1-1) was led by Trey Quinn who posted 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Northern (2-0) used an 18-0 run in the first half to build a 28-10 lead.
Junior Taylor Kuhlman scored all seven of his points during the run. Royal added three points and four other Polar Bears scored to give Northern its largest lead of the game.
The Blazers would chip away at the lead and cut the deficit to 38-29 at the half.
Hood tied the game at 44 with 14:24 remaining but the Polar Bears responded with a 7-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer from junior Tony Meyer.
Hood would tie the game at 55-55 with 4:36 left but a jumper by Royal gave Northern the lead for good.
The Polar Bears forced 13 turnovers compared to giving up nine of their own.
Ohio Northern shot 24-of-50 from the field and 6-of-18 in 3-point range.
The Polar Bears will be in action again on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Defiance.
