SPRINGFIELD — Senior Nate Bascom registered a hat trick, scoring three goals in a school-record 3:37 span, to lead the No. 12-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team to a 5-0 victory at Wittenberg Tuesday night.
The Polar Bears improve to 5-1-0, while the Tigers fall to 3-2-1.
Bascom scored at 59:38, 61:46 and 63:15 to turn a 2-0 Northern lead into a commanding 5-0 advantage.
He now has a team-high seven goals and 17 points in six matches this season and moved to third all-time at ONU with 45 career goals and 118 career points.
Junior Jeremy Barnes started the scoring with just 4:10 elapsed in the match off an assist from junior Matt Fleming.
The goals was the fifth of the season for Barnes.
Senior Austin Windsor made it a 2-0 match with his first goal of the season, scored unassisted at the 15:53 mark.
Bascom then put the match away with an impressive flurry, scoring off assists from freshman Keegan Ross on his first goal, senior Cameron Johnson on his second goal and seniors Craig Sumner and Ryan Sabol on his third goal.
Senior Mac Church had five saves in goal to register his school-record 36th career shutout.
ONU out-shot Wittenberg 18-8 and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears will return home for two matches this weekend, hosting Franklin (Ind.) on Friday and Transylvania (Ky.) on Saturday at the ONU Soccer Field.
