Volleyball opens its 2014 season with two wins at the 36th annual ONU Invitational

ADA — Sophomore Ashley Borchers and junior Kaitlann Hogrefe opened the 2014 season strong as the Ohio Northern volleyball team defeated Thiel (Pa.) and Thomas More (Ky.) on the first day of the 36th annual ONU Invitational Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears defeated Thiel 25-15, 25-10, 25-9 in the first match Friday afternoon, and topped Thomas More 25-20 25-27, 25-18, 25-19 Friday evening.  

Against Thiel, Borchers and Hogrefe had eight kills each to lead ONU. Borchers also dished out 30 assists and junior Ellie Gillespie chipped in seven kills while freshman libero Lauren Hulette had 13 digs. 

Thiel was lead by Alex Hall with nine kills and nine digs. 

The Polar Bears closed out the evening with a 4-set win over aganist Thomas More.

Sophomore Kristin Sessler and freshman Hannah Davis each had 11 kills in the match to lead ONU.

Sessler also had 23 digs, freshman Megan Nieszala had 17 digs and Borchers had 33 assists.

Thomas More was led by Jessica Knaley with 11 kills and Kelsey Castiglioni with 31 digs.

The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday for day two of the ONU Invitational, taking on Defiance at 10 am and Wooster at Noon.
