HERSHEY, Pa. — Senior Cody Lovejoy finished with a 1-2 record at the 2015 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center on Friday.
Lovejoy, who entered the tournament as the top seed at heavyweight, finished his season with a 43-2 record and 27 pins.
He pinned Justice Davis of Concordia (Minn.) with 10 seconds left in the match in the first round on Friday morning.
He then dropped a 13-2 major decision to eighth-seeded Terrance Jean-Jacques of Rhode Island College in the Quarterfinals Friday evening.
In the Consolation Third Round late Friday night, he fell to seventh-seeded Anthony Edgren of Wisconsin-Whitewater 7-4.
"Obviously it was not the result we were hoping for," ONU head coach Ron Beaschler said. "He had a great season and a great career. He accomplished two things that had not happened before at Ohio Northern - win 40 matches in a season twice and win the Elite 89 Award, which he did not once but twice."
Against Davis, Lovejoy was winning 5-2 with the riding time point locked up late in the third period when he took Davis down and quickly pinned him.
It was Lovejoy's 27th pin of the season.
Jean-Jacques had two first period takedowns to lead 4-1 early, then added three more takedowns and a reversal to record the win.
Against Edgren, Lovejoy got an early takedown and led 4-1 in the first period, but gave up six unanswered points and was eliminated.
The top eight finishers in each of the 10 weight classes earn All-America honors.
Last season, Lovejoy finished seventh nationally and had a 43-5 record.
He currently ranks second all-time in ONU history with a 144-36 career record and is the first Polar Bear in school history to record two 40-win seasons.
