ADA — Senior Lucas Shumate (Wapakoneta/Spencerville) led the Ohio Northern men's outdoor track and field team to a second place finish at the 51st Annual Centre (Ky.) Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky.
The Polar Bears finished second of 17 teams and improve to 31-7 overall.
Shumate won both the hammer throw and discus throw to lead the Polar Bears.
Shumate claimed the hammer throw, with a toss of 179' 2.00" beating the rest of the field by more than 13 feet.
The senior's toss currently is the fourth best in the nation.
Shumate won his second event of the afternoon as he won the discus throw with a toss of 147' 7.00"
Junior Bobby Borger (Perrysburg) led a 1-2-3 finish in the 10,000-meter run as he won the event in 32:11.49, senior Cully Gordon (Holmesville/West Holmes) finished second in 32:16.10 and sophomore Spencer Schulze (St. Henry) finished third in 32:40.69.
Freshman David Harvey (Mechanicsburg) led a trio of Polar Bears to finish in the top-5 of the high jump as he won the event with a height of 6' 2.25".
Juniors Luke Bogdanovich (Akron/Coventry) and Alexander Sibila (Zionsville, Ind.) finished fourth and fifth in the event, respectively, as Bogdanovich finished fourth with a height of 6' 0.50" and Sibila took fifth place with a leap of 6' 0.50".
The 4x100-meter relay team of junior Conner Karg (West Liberty/Salem), sophomore Nicholas Krugh (Van Wert) and freshmen Jacob Vires (Monroe) and Jordan Smith (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian) posted a third place finish in the event in :43.47.
Vires also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in :11.19.
Junior Matt Molinaro (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle) also posted a top-3 finish for ONU as he finished third in the 400-meter dash in :49.71.
In the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Ian McVey (Stow/Munroe Falls) finished fourth overall in 4:06.50.
Northern returns to action Saturday, Apr. 8 as they travel to Delaware to compete in the Ohio Wesleyan Marv Frye Invitational.
