Men's Soccer subdued by No. 7 Calvin (Mich.), drop 9-2 decision in ONU Invitational finale

ADA - The Ohio Northern men's soccer team fell to No. 7-ranked Calvin (Mich.) 9-2 on Saturday evening in the final match of the 2018 ONU Invitational held at Kerscher Stadium in Ada.

The Polar Bears drop to 1-2-1 on the season while Calvin improves to 4-0-0 overall.

Calvin got off to a quick start in the opening frame when Jacob Witte tapped in a goal from six yards out during the fifth minute of play.

From there, the Knights would string together four consective goals before sophomore defender Beelal Hasan (Westerville/Thomas) responded with ONU's first strike in the 31st minute, his third score of the 2018 campaign.

The visitors would continue to see offesive success in the second half, notching four successive goals to open the stanza. Northern would answer by forcing an own goal from Calvin in the 73rd minute, but the Polar Bears would then be held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

In addition to Hasan's efforts, sophomore forward Zachary Yoder (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) would help pace the Northern offense by recording a team-high two shots Saturday evening.

Additionally, Senior goalkeeper William Velotta (Gates Mills/Gilmour Academy) posted five saves in net while classmate Kyle Dunnavant (Mount Vernon) produced one save in the contest.

Hope (Mich.) would be crowned the ONU Invitational champions after going an undefeated 2-0-0 over the weekend. They would edge out Calvin, who also finished 2-0-0, by conceding less goals throughout their two matches during the tournament.

Ohio Northern will return to action Wednesday, September 12 when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
