Zupancic sets school mark as ONU womens track takes second at

ADA — Sophomore Courtney Zupancic and Freshman Melissa Goodman both bested the ONU shot put record as ONU womens track took second place at the Division III All-Ohio Championship at Otterbein.

Throwing her personal record in both the weight throw and shot put, while also setting the new school record in the shot put, Zupancic took first in the weight throw and second in shot put, heaving 49’ 8 1/2” and 41’ 8 1/2”, respectively.

Also surpassing the original school record was Goodman. In the shot put, Goodman threw for her season best with 40’ 11”, earning third place.

“I think the women surprised everybody today,” said head coach Brian Cole. “Courtney [Zupancic] had a great day today and Melissa Goodman throwing a school record in the shot was tremendous for a freshman. Overall, the girls came ready to compete and we had a great day.”

Freshman Jessica Naderer also broke her season record in the pole vault, finishing second place with a vault of 10’ 4”. Team mates Janelle Jansen and Aubrie Stechschulte tied for fourth place in pole vault, vaulting 9’ 10”.

Scoring third place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:09.28 were juniors Joy Kessler and Danielle Noe, sophomore Brittany Farber, and freshman Lauren Rupp.

With a season best of 7.47 in the 55-meter dash, Abby Schulte finished fourth place for the Polar Bears.

Schulte was also a part of the 4x200-meter relay, who earned fifth place in 1:50.91. Other relay members included senior Amy Swigert and sophomores Karen Thatcher and Kaila Barga.

Clocking in for her personal record in 1:00.96 and scoring fifth place in the 400-meter dash was Noe.

Also breaking her personal record was Rachel Smith, who ran 2:24.59 in the 800-meter run, scoring fifth place.

Jansen had a jump of 16’ 1 3/4” and Swigert 15’ 11 3/4” in the long jump, finishing in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Northern ended with 76 points for second place against the 17 other schools. Host Otterbein won with 102.75 points, Ohio Wesleyan took third place with 66 points, Capital took fourth place with 64.5, and Baldwin-Wallace took fifth place with 51 points

The Ohio Northern women’s track and field team returns to action next Friday, when ONU hosts Friday Night Series #4.
