Feb. 27, 2008 By Tim Glon BABSON PARK, Fla. The Ohio Northern women’s tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip with an impressive 6-3 victory at No. 24-ranked (NAIA) Webber International (Fla.) Wednesday morning. The Polar Bears improve to 8-3 overall and end their spring break trip with a 3-2 record. The Warriors fall to 0-2. Seniors Betsy Brichler and Ashley Yontz led the Polar Bears by rallying for a 9-8(5) victory at No. 2 doubles. The pair trailed Colene Alexis and Kammie Bilardello 7-4 in the proset, but won the next three games to tie the match at 7-7. With the match tied at 8-8, Alexis and Bilardello scored the first three points of the tiebreaker but Brichler and Yontz again rallied by scoring seven of the next nine points to win the tiebreaker 7-5. Yontz then went on to top Alexis 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Brichler won by injury default at N o. 6 singles. Sophomore Katie Gibbs and freshman Jacki Hillis won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles as the Polar Bears took two of the three doubles points. Gibbs then won 6-2, 6-1 over Bilardello at No. 4 singles and freshman Kristin Timperman had the most impressive win of the day, a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Yini Esquilin at No. 5 singles. The Polar Bears will return to action March 8 at home against Tiffin at 1 pm. The match will follow ONU’s annual Klondike Kid’s Club tennis clinic that day at 10 am. |
