Ohio Northern moves to 4-0 on Fall season with wins over Manchester, Saint Francis |

Sept. 17, 2007 By Tim Glon FORT WAYNE, Ind. The Ohio Northern women's tennis team improved to 4-0 on its fall season with victories over Saint Francis (Ind.) and Manchester (Ind.) Monday afternoon at Wildwood Racquet Club. The Polar Bears defeated Division II Saint Francis 7-2 and topped defending Heartland Conference champion Manchester 6-3. Senior Ashley Yontz posted a 3-1 record on the day, inching her closer to the 100-Win plateau. In three-plus seasons, Yontz has an impressive 97-20 record. Freshman Jacqueline Sammon was 3-0 on the day, winning at No. 1 singles and doubles against Manchester and winning at No. 2 singles against St. Francis. In the opener against St. Francis, ONU swept the six singles matches after dropping two of three doubles contests. Yontz and freshman Elizabeth Bajusz each won twice. Yontz won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Bajusz won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and the duo combined for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Rachel Randall won at No. 1 singles, sophomore Katie Gibbs won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles and freshman Kristen Timperman won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. The Cougars fall to 3-4. Against Manchester, Northern again trailed 2-1 after doubles and won five of the six singles contests to win the match. Sammon and Randall combined to win at No. 1 doubles. Sammon also won at No. 1 singles and Randall won at No. 2 singles. Yontz won 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-0 at No. 4 singles, Bajusz won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Gibbs won 8-5 at No. 6 singles. The Spartans fall to 5-2 on the year. The Polar Bears will wrap up their 2007 fall schedule Friday and Saturday with the ITA Regionals at DePauw (Ind.) |
