Polar Bears wrap up OAC slate with 7-2 victory at Mt Union |

April 19, 2008 By Patrick Massara ALLIANCE The Ohio Northern women’s tennis team defeated Mount Union 7-2 Saturday afternoon in its final regular match of the season. The win clinches a home match for ONU in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. Northern will face Capital at 3:30 pm Tuesday at the University Courts. The Polar Bears finish their regular season 18-5 overall and 7-2 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders move to 13-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play. Mount Union will also host an OAC quarterfinals match this week. Senior Ashley Yontz continued her winning ways on the year as she won her No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2. Along with fellow senior Betsy Brichler, the duo won their No. 2 doubles match 8-6. Yontz finishes the regular season with 35 overall victories. Freshman Liz Bajusz also added two wins on the day. She defeated her No. 3 singles opponent 6-4, 6-1. Bajusz and freshman Jacqueline Sammon earned a No. 1 doubles victory 8-4. Sammon and Bajusz finish the regular season with 32 and 31 overall victories respectively. Sophomores Katie Gibbs and Jacki Hillis won their No. 3 doubles match 8-3. Gibbs and Hillis lead all ONU doubles duos with 14 victories on the year. Gibbs also added another win as she won her No. 4 singles match 7-5, 6-2. Freshman Kristen Timperman defeated her No. 5 singles opponent 6-2, 6-1. Timperman moves to 17-8 in singles play this year. Ohio Northern’s next match is Wednesday at 3:30 pm as they will host a quarterfinals match in the OAC tournament. |
