Women's Tennis wraps up fall slate at ITA Regionals

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The Ohio Northern women’s tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its 2007-08 season at the ITA Regional Championships Fri.-Sun. at DePauw.

The Polar Bears finished the non-scoring tournament with an 8-10 singles record and a 4-8 doubles mark.

Sophomore Rachel Randall and freshman Jacqueline Sammon each reached the round of 32 in the singles tournament, finishing with 2-1 records.

Randall won 6-1, 6-0 over Kristin Pfund of Ohio Wesleyan and 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 over Michelle Mulder of Albion (Mich.) before falling to Katrina Kocemba of Washington (Mo.) in a tight 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 decision.

Sammon topped Julia Diskint of Kenyon 7-6(8), 6-3 and downed Trace Hessler of DePauw (Ind.) 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Jackie Bild of Washington 6-0, 6-1.

Senior Ashley Yontz, sophomore Katie Gibbs and freshmen Kiz Bajusz and Jacki Hillis all went 1-1 in singles play.

In doubles, all four ONU teams were eliminated in the first rounds, but the team of Randall and Sammon battled back to win two of three matches in the consolation bracket, reaching the quarterfinals.

Yontz finished the tournament with a 2-3 overall record. She will enter the spring season with a career record of 99-23, leaving her just one win shy of becoming the seventh member of ONU's 100-Win Club.

The Polar Bears will return to action March 2-8 during their annual spring break trip.
