Polar Bears defeat Huntington 6-3, top Muskingum 9-0

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s tennis team defeated Huntington (Ind.) 6-3 and topped Ohio Athletic Conference foe Muskingum 9-0 Saturday afternoon at University Courts.

Ohio Northern moves to 16-3 overall and 5-0 in the OAC after the two wins.

Huntington falls to 11-5 on the season, while Muskingum is now 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the OAC this season.

This is ONU’s seventh consecutive win and moves the Polar Bears to 7-0 at home this season.

Senior Ashley Yontz went 4-0 on the day for the Polar Bears. Along with Betsy Brichler, Yontz won both No. 2 doubles matches.

The duo beat Huntington 8-5 and Muskingum 8-0. Yontz also won her No. 3 sinlges matches today by marks of 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively.

The four wins moved Yontz into third all-time on the ONU Women’s Tennis overall wins list, passing Melanie Oleski with her 128th career win on her final match of the day.

Fellow senior Brichler also added three wins on the day.

In addition to her two doubles wins, she defeated her No. 5 singles Muskingum opponent 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Jacqueline Sammon added three wins as well.

With freshman teammate Liz Bajusz, the duo defeated Muskingum in No. 1 doubles 8-0, and Sammon earned No. 1 singles wins as she defeated Huntington 6-1, 6-1 and Muskingum 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Kristen Timperman extended her singles match winning streak to seven after both matches, taking No. 5 singles against Huntington 6-0, 6-0 and also No. 4 singles against Muskingum 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore doubles partners Katie Gibbs and Jacki Hillis both went 2-1 on the day.

Together they defeated Muskingum 8-0 in No. 3 doubles.

Gibbs added a No. 3 singles win as she defeated her Huntington opponent 6-1, 6-0, while Hillis won her No. 6 singles match against Huntington 7-5, 2-6, 10-7.

Freshman Emily Bunka defeated Muskingum at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-2.

The Polar Bear’s next match will be Wednesday at 3:30 pm as they travel to OAC opponent Heidelberg.
