Bukowy leads Lady Polar Bears on Day 2 of Wooster Invitational |

Nov. 30, 2007 By Tim Glon WOOSTER Freshman Hannah Bukowy finished second in the 100 breast, leading the Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team on day two of the Wooster Invitational on Friday. The Lady Polar Bears stand in seventh place in the 11-team invitational with 586.5 points through 13 events. Wooster is first with 1,051 points, Allegheny (Pa.) is second with 757 and Oberlin and California (Pa.) are tied for third with 693. Bukowy was second in in the 100 breast in 1:08.91. Sophomore Lacey Shumate, the 2007 OAC Women's Swimmer of the Year, was 21st in the event in 1:16.27 in her first action of the 2007-08 season. Samantha Ruffin was 23rd in 1:19.32. Katherine Moore was fourth in the 100 fly in 1:02.03, Luisa Chinchilla was 19th in 1:07.60 and Jenna Schaffner was 24th in 1:09.58. "We had a great day today, with some great season best times and a few lifetime bests," ONU head coach Peggy Ewqald said. "The goal of this meet was to learn to swim fast in the middle of the season without a taper. It's the mental challenge to throw on a fast suit and just step up and race without shaving and tapering. We're learning to do this. I'm pleased with our performances thus far in the meet and expect to learn what we need to do the second half of our season as we look to February's OAC Championships." In the 100 back, Cassandra Fennell was eighth in 1:03.80 and katherine Heagle was 18th in 1:05.57. Three Lady Polar Bears placed in the 400 I.M. Sara Oswald was ninth in 5:00.88, Janelle Cain was 14th in 5:11.77 and Amanda Lovell was 17th in 5:11.97. In the 200 free, Kim Randall was 16th in 2:07.04 and Jillian Huber was 17th in 2:04.40. The 200 medley relay team of Fennell, Bukowy, Moore and Randall was fourth in 1:53.55. The 800 free relay team of Huber, Cain, Oswald and Randall was ninth in 8:34.84. The final day is Saturday.
