ONU Women’s Soccer shuts out Mount Union 3-0 on Senior Day

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s soccer team began the game with two early goals and never looked back en route to a 3-0 Senior Day victory over Mount Union on Saturday at the ONU Soccer Field.

The Polar Bears improved to 10-4-1 overall and 7-0-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Purple Raiders dropped to 3-12-1 overall and 0-7-0 in the OAC.

Junior Erin Stapp had a goal and an assist and sophomore Kaitin Sanders recorded two assists.

Senior keeper Barbie Krieger had one save and picked up her third shutout of the season.

Senior Laura Childerson gave ONU a 1-0 lead just 3:54 into the game when she finished a cross from Stapp.

Six minutes later, Stapp kicked a goal to the right corner of the net after Sanders fed her a through ball.

Northern’s defense held a 2-0 lead throughout the majority of the game.

Junior Angie Pisut added an insurance goal with 8:17 left in the game when she finished a Sanders’ through ball from eight yards out to give the Polar Bears the 3-0 lead.

The Polar Bears held a 22-3 edge on shots and a 15-1 advantage on shots on goal.

Mount Union keeper Kaitlyn Mallernee made 12 saves in the loss.

The Purple Raiders closest shot at a score came at the 13:55 mark in the first half when Amanda Stanavich sent a shot off the cross bar.

“We’re really happy to be 7-0 and pick up a win on Senior Day,” ONU head coach Mark Batman said. “I’m real proud of our seniors, Barbie, Katrina, Jess, Laura and Meggan. We were aggressive from the start and that gave us the early lead.”

Ohio Northern returns to action this Tuesday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Baldwin-Wallace at the ONU Soccer Field in Ada.
