Women's Basketball to open 2008-09 slate at Trine (Ind.) Tip-Off Tournament

ADA - The Ohio Northern women's basketball team will open its 2008-09 season Nov. 21-22 at the Trine (Ind.) Tip-Off Tournament in Angola, Ind.

The Polar Bears, under eighth-year head coach Michele Durand, will also play at the Land of Magic Classic at Daytona Beach, Fla. Dec. 28-29.

Northern will open its home schedule Nov. 25 against Wittenberg in a non-conference contest at 7:30 pm at the ONU Sports Center.

Michele Durand named WBCA Region Coach of the Year

ADA - Ohio Northern women's basketball coach Michele Durand has been named the Russell Athletic/Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Region Six Coach of the Year as voted upon by the head coaches in the region.

Durand guided the Polar Bears to a 19-7 overall record this season, the most wins since the 1987-88 season. Northern also finished second in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 14-4 mark, the best finish since 1987-88.

Cevasco, Markle named Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference

ADA - Ohio Northern seniors Jenny Markle (Fairlawn/Copley) and Megan Cevasco (Copley) earned Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference in women's basketball for the 2007-08 season.

Markle is a two-time Academic All-OAC honoree, earning First Team honors this season and Honorable Mention honors last year.

Cevasco garnered Academic All-OAC honors for the third time in her career. She earned Honorable Mention this season after earned First Team honors each of the past two seasons.

Brand and Markle named First Team All-OAC in women’s basketball

ADA - Ohio Northern seniors Erin Brand (Yorkshire/Marion Local) and Jenny Markle (Fairlawn/Copley) were named First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference in women's basketball for the 2007-08 season.

This is Brand's third All-Conference nomination and Markle's first as Northern was the only team to receive two First Team awards.

Brand had a solid senior season, leading the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game and in rebounding at 5.1 rebounds per contest. She scored double figures in 22 of 26 games, including the last 13 games of the season.

Hot shooting leads Mount Union to 59-46 victory over ONU in OAC Quarterfinals

ADA - Hot second-half shooting leads Mount Union to a 59-46 victory over Ohio Northern Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at the ONU Sports Center.

The Purple Raiders improve to 10-16 on the season and will play Wilmington in the semifinals on Thursday at 7:30 pm. ONU ends its season 19-7 overall.

The contest was originally scheduled for Tuesday night, but was postponed to Wednesday due to a winter storm that came through the area.
