ADA The Ohio Northern women’s basketball team is off to its best start in 20 years at 15-4 overall and are in first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 10-2 mark.
The team’s success has not gone unnoticed by the national polls as the D3Hoops.com and ESPN women’s poll have the Polar Bears receiving votes in each poll.
In the D3Hoops.com poll, Northern received the 30th-most points with eight votes.
The ESPN poll has ONU received the 31st-most points with five votes.
Last week, the Polar Bears received the 28th-most points with 34 votes in the D3Hoops.com poll and received the 27th-most points with 11 votes in the ESPN poll.
Northern is tied with No. 19-ranked Baldwin-Wallace atop the OAC standings.
A large reason for Northern’s early success has been the play of its senior standouts Jenny Markle and Erin Brand.
Markle, the nation’s leader in three-point percentage at 57.0 percent (53-of-93) is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 ppg.
Brand leads the Polar Bears in scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.5 rpg) this season.
Brand also became the eighth member of the ONU Women's Basketball 1,000 Point Club with 1,022 career points.
The Polar Bears will host Otterbein on Wednesday at 7:30 before traveling to John Carroll on Saturday for a 3 pm contest.
