Three named All-Tournament as ONU sweeps Border Battle

SPRINGFIELD – Outside hitter Laura Vuyk, middle hitter Liz Schnelle and setter Katie Weininger were all selected to the Border Battle All-Tournament team as No. 18 Ohio Northern completed the weekend sweep, defeating Hope (Mich.) and Adrian (Mich.) Saturday at the HPER Center.

With the four wins in two days, ONU improves its record to 9-4 on the season.

In the morning match, the Polar Bears defeated Hope 30-20, 30-17, 29-31, 25-30, 15-12 and later beat Adrian 30-22, 28-30, 30-28, 30-15.

Vuyk blasted 31 kills in the two matches and exceeded the 20-dig mark in each match, recording 22 against Hope and 21 against Adrian.

Schnelle continued to the lead team offensively with 38 kills and added eight blocks for the day.

Weininger helped balance the offensive attack with 107 assists in the two contests. She added 21 digs and nine kills.

Abby Schaller, Melissa Goodman and Samantha Markham added 24, 17 and 15 kills, respectively.

Renee Berry had an excellent day in the service box with 10 aces while adding 31 digs on defense.

Libero Mandi Fought had 53 digs on the day while fellow defensive specialist Liz Decima contributed 29 digs.

Ohio Northern ended the tournament in a tie for first-place with No. 2 Wittenberg, which also defeated all four Michigan teams.

The Polar Bears will open Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Mt. Union at 7 pm.
