It came down the final steps in the men’s mile run to determine a champion. Hamilton sophomore Peter Kosgei won by .01sec to win the title in the 2008 NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships, Saturday.

His winning time of 4:11.17 broke the previous ONU Sportscenter record of 4:14.14 held by Mt. Union’s Jeremy Velliquette. This is Kosqei’s second time being an All-American.

“The race finished so close I wasn’t sure if I had won or not. I had thought that I may have lost but then the announcer said my name as the champion and that made me happy. It felt good to come in ranked number one as a sophomore but it was alot of pressure to live up to those expectations. I got a call from my girlfriend last night and it gave me some extra confidence. It feels good to be a two-time All-American and relieved that this race is over and to come out on top.” -- Peter Kosgei, Hamilton
Wisconson Le Crosse senior Paul Zdroik gave Kosgei all he could handle as he became national runner-up (4:11.18) while Keene State freshman Craig McPherson placed third (4:12.85). Zdroik and McPherson also broke the Fieldhouse record.

Carnegie Mellon junior Brian Harvey junior placed fourth (4:14.77) and Loras senior Ben Grant placed fifth (4:15.21). They were followed by Keene State senior Kevin Kellereh in sixth place (4:15.29).

Oneonta SUNY senior Alex Grout finished seventh place (4:15.40) and the final All-American and eighth place finisher was Williams College junior Mark Chaffee.
