For the second time in three seasons, Jonathan Garcia of Massachusetts-Dartmouth won the NCAA Championship in the 55-meter hurdles. Garcia edged Jon Schellin, a two-time All-America in the event, by .03 of a second to win the 2008 crown Saturday afternoon.

Garcia finished in 7.46, Schellin was second in 7.49, Beresford Brown of Moravian was third in 7.52 and Matt Cruse of Bethany was fourth in 7.60.

“Last year was a rough year. I did a lot of watching. This year was difficult mentally just trying to stay healthy. I really wasn’t focused on the NCAA title until the last few weeks. In fifth place was Mario Hicks of Buffalo State in 7.60, Dorran Coley of Thiel was sixth in 7.61, Taylor Ferda of Bethel was seventh in 7.73 and Howard Powell of Wheaton (Mass.) was eighth in 7.99.

 Garcia won the 2006 title, but was forced to sit out last year’s indoor season with a hamstring injury. Now healthy, the senior got his second NCAA title and ended his career on top of the podium.
