ADA — Mount Union’s distance medley relay team and Greg Tyson of Heidelberg each had outstanding performance during Day 1 of men’s competition at the Ohio Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships on Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.

Ohio Northern leads after the first day with 24 points. The Polar Bears are followed by Heidelberg (22 points), Mount Union (10), Baldwin-Wallace (8), Otterbein (5), Muskingum (4), Capital (2), John Carroll (2), and Wilmington (1).

Tyson turned in the top performance of the day by defending his OAC title in the long jump with a leap of 7.36 meters (24-01.75). The jump automatically qualifies Tyson for the NCAA Championships and is the best NCAA III mark in the country this season.

Finishing second in the long jump with a NCAA provisionally qualifying distance of 7.07 meters (23-02.50) was Ohio Northern junior Ryan Robertson. Joining Tyson and Robertson as All-OAC in the long jump was Heidelberg freshman Julius Higginbotham as he jumped 6.85 meters (22-05.75).

Mount Union’s distance medley team set a new OAC Championship record, wining the event in a time of 10:00.20. That time also automatically qualifies them for next week’s NCAA Championships.

Ohio Northern finished second in an NCAA provisional time of 10:13.14 followed by Heidelberg in 10:24.10.

Defending 55-meter dash champion Nick Saluppo of Mount Union set himself up to repeat in Saturday’s 55 final by running a 6.45 in his preliminary heat.

The OAC Championships wrap-up tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. for field events and 1:45 p.m. for the running events.
