Schultz sets record in 1650 free to lead Polar Bears on Day 3 of Wooster Invitational

WOOSTER — Freshman Michael Schultz set his third school record in as many days and led the Ohio Northern men's swimming and diving team to a fourth place finish out of nine teams at the Wooster Invitational Thursday-Saturday.

The Polar Bears finished with 1,090 points.

Westminter (Pa.) won the meet with 1,671, Wooster was second with 1,636 points, Case Western Reserve was third with 1,296.5 points and Oberlin was fifth with 647 points.

Michael Schultz set his third school record of the three-day invitational, winning the 1,650 freestyle in 16:41.54, shaving more than 12 seconds off the previous mark.

He also set the 1,000 free record with a 10:01.84 split in his 1,650 swim.

Earlier this week, Schultz set the ONU record in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. He also set the 1,000 free record this season, giving him four records in the first half of the season.

Brett Kuhn also had an outstanding effort, winning the 100 free in :47.94. John Fusco was 12th in the event in :49.17 and John Miller was 21st in :50.82.

George Chesney finished second in the 1-meter diving with 371.70 points.

Casey Davis was sixth in the 1650 free in 17:24.14 and Stephon Andrew was 13th in 18:08.33.

Garrett Dauch was sixth in the 200 back in 2:03.34 and Dan Henry was 16th in 2:10.95.

Mike Anderson was ninth in the 200 breast in 2:17.71. Four other Polar Bears placed in the event, as Ryan Oberst was 11th in 2:19.08, 17. Jeb Deal was 17th in 2:25.13, Warrenn Burless was 23rd in 2:33.16, and Michael Madsen was 24th in 2:37.30.

In the 200 fly, Nick Swint was ninth in 2:07.21, Bill Neidinger was 10th in 2:09.37 and Andrew Leavitt was 12th in 2:12.92.

The 400 free relay team of Kuhn, Fusco, Dauch and Schultz were fourth in 3:13.99.

The Polar Bears will return to action during the Christmas holiday break Dec. 27-Jan. 6 at Delray Beach, Fla.
