By Gary Petit ADA Sophomore Dan Otanicar (Wadsworth) and junior Ryan Smith (Miamisburg) were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Region Teams. Voting was conducted by the head coaches in the Great Lakes Region. Otanicar was selected as a First Team All-Region honoree and Smith took home Second Team honors. Otanicar had another stellar season, leading the team in every offensive category for the second straight season. He also earned First Team All-OAC honors for the second straight year and was a Third Team NSCAA All-Region honoree in 2006. Otanicar was second in the OAC with 11 assists, third in points with 31 and fourth in goals scored with 10. He was named the OAC Player of the Week on Sept. 17 after scoring two goals and adding three assists in wins over Defiance, Calvin (Mich.) and Hope (Mich.). He also scored two goals in a homecoming win over Marietta on Oct. 6. This is the second straight season for Smith earning Second Team All-Region honors. He also took home First Team All-OAC honors for the second consecutive year. Smith scored his first collegiate goal in a 6-1 win at Mount Union on Oct. 20. He also added two assists this season and was a key reason why the ONU defense recorded six shutouts on the year. “I thought both players had outstanding seasons,” said ONU head coach Brent Ridenour. “I believe they both would be the first to admit that these are team awards and without the success of the entire team and program, these awards would not be possible.” ONU finished the season with a 14-6-2 overall record and a 5-2-2 mark in the OAC. |
