Five Men's Soccer players earn

By Gary Petit ADA Five members of the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors in voting conducted by the ten conference head coaches. Senior Zach Huffman (Dayton/Bellbrook), junior Ryan Smith (Miamisburg) and sophomore Dan Otanicar (Wadsworth) all were First Team honorees. Junior Adam Ross (Cincinnati/Cin. Hill Christian Acad.) earned Second Team All-OAC honors and fellow junior Ben Jackson (Scipio Center, N.Y/ Southern Cayuga) took home Honorable Mention honors. Huffman earned the first All-OAC honors of his career. He was very consistant in the midfield this season, scoring five goals and dishing out six assists. Huffman scored a goal and added two assists in an 8-0 win over Mt. St. Joseph. He was a three-year starter and finished his career with 13 goals and 14 assists. Smith earned First Team All-OAC honors for the second straight season. He was named the OAC Co-Defender of the Year in 2006. Smith scored his first collegiate goal in a 6-1 win at Mount Union on Oct. 20. He also added two assists this season and was a key reason why the ONU defense recorded six shutouts on the year.
Otanicar was second in the OAC with 11 assists, third in points with 31 and fourth in goals scored with 10. Twice, he scored two goals in a game, the last of which in a homecoming win over Marietta on Oct. 6. He was named the OAC Player of the Week on Sept. 17 after scoring two goals and adding three assists in wins over Defiance, Calvin (Mich.) and Hope (Mich.). Ross picked up his first All-OAC honors this season after scoring nine goals and handing out six assists. He was also named the OAC Player of the Week on Oct. 8 for scoring the game-tying goal in a 2-1 overtime win against Heidelberg and added two goals and two assists in the win against Marietta.
Jackson took home Honorable Mention All-OAC honors for the second consecutive season. He and Smith combined to be two of the toughest defenders in the conference. Jackson proved to also be an offensive threat, scoring four goals and adding five assists. ONU finished the season with a 14-6-2 overall record and a 5-2-2 mark in the OAC. The Bears made a return trip to the OAC Tournament and bowed out in the semifinals. |
