Sept. 8, 2007 By Zach Stipe ADA Seven different players scored goals as the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team picked up an 8-0 home-opening victory over Mount St. Joseph in the second game of the ONU-Adidas Classic on Saturday at the ONU Soccer Field. The Polar Bears improve to 2-2, while the Lions drop to 0-2. The game was called with 19:24 remaing because of lightning. Northern’s eight goals are its most since Sept. 20, 2001, when ONU shutout Bluffton 9-0 in Ada. Senior Zach Huffman tapped in a Dan Otanicar throw-in to give ONU a 1-0 lead just under seven minutes into the game. Otanicar scored his team-high third goal of the season to make the score 2-0 at 26:29. The sophomore took a through ball from freshman Chet Gapcznski and finished it from 10 yards away. Three Polar Bears came off the bench and scored goals to close out the first half. Junior Geoff Smith scored off of sophomore Tyler Johnston’s deflected kick at 37:29. Less than two minutes later, Huffman fed freshman Chaz McCullah for a goal from 20 yards away. At 43:21, Smith found sophomore Brian Bolibrzuch for another score to give ONU a 5-0 lead at halftime. Otanicar assisted Smith on his second goal of the day 10 minutes into the second half. The score reached 7-0 at the 56:48 mark when sophomore Ben Tarkany headed in a Huffman corner kick. Freshman Jeff Kucera ended the scoring at 63:06 when he took a Bolibrzuch pass and netted it in from six yards out. Saturday was the 13th win in a row for the Polar Bears at the ONU Soccer Field. ONU outshot Mount St. Joseph 25-4. “Today was a great way to open the tournament,” head coach Brent Ridenour said. “We wanted another shutout and our defense was able to get us one.” SUNY Brockport (NY) scored two second-half goals to defeat Roanoke (Va.) 2-0 during the first game of the Classic. The ONU-Adidas Classic wraps up on Sunday as Mount St. Joseph takes on SUNY Brockport (NY) at noon and ONU plays Roanoke (Va.) at 2 p.m. |
