Oct. 20, 2007 By Zach Stipe ALLIANCE Sophomore Tyler Johnston scored two goals in three minutes to lead the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team past Mount Union 6-1 on Saturday. The Polar Bears improved to 13-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Purple Raiders dropped to 5-8-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the OAC. Cory Ivasku gave Mount Union a 1-0 lead at the 30:49 mark in the first half. Johnston responded with a pair of goals before the intermission to give ONU the lead for good, though. Johnston tied the game with a goal from 15 yards out at 37:59, and gave ONU the lead with a score off an assist from sophomore Brian Bolibrzuch less than three minutes later. One minute into the second half, senior Zach Huffman scored to make it 3-1. Sophomore Dan Otanicar assisted Adam Ross on a goal in the 51st minute to increase the score. Junior Ben Jackson scored and unassisted goal in the 73rd minute and junior Ryan Smith converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to give ONU the 6-1 lead and complete the scoring. ONU freshman keeper Ben Huntley had five saves and improved to 8-0-1 on the season. MUC keeper Matt Mazzolini had seven saves. The Polar Bears held a 18-14 advantage on shots. Ohio Northern returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Baldwin-Wallace for a 7 p.m. match in Berea. |
