Oct. 6, 2007 By Zach Stipe ADA Junior Adam Ross had two goals and two assists to lead the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team to a 7-1 homecoming game victory over Marietta on Saturday at the ONU Soccer Field. The Polar Bears improve to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers drop to 5-5-1 and 1-2 in the OAC. In addition to Ross, sophomores Dan Otanicar and Brian Bolibrzuch each had outstanding games, as well. Otanicar connected on his team-leading seventh and eighth goals of the season and added an assist, while Bolibrzuch had a goal and an assist. Freshman keeper Ben Huntley was dominant in goal for the Polar Bears to improve to 5-0 on the season. He made three saves and only gave up a goal on a penalty kick. Senior Nick Farmwald scored the game’s first goal on a cross from Ross at the 21:04 mark in the first half. Just 52 seconds later, Otanicar scored on a through ball from Ross to give ONU a 2-0 lead. At 36:50, Bolibrzuch scored his sixth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Tyler Johnston as ONU took a 3-0 lead into halftime. Ross scored off a steal in the fifth minute of the second half to increase the Polar Bears’ lead to 4-0. Otanicar followed just three minutes later with a steal and goal of his own to make the score 5-0. Marietta scored its only goal at the 56:50 mark when Sergio Fajardo converted a penalty kick past Huntley after a foul in the box. Ross scored his second goal of the game 37 seconds after the Pioneers’ score, when he finished a cross from Otanicar. Sophomore Chris Corrado also assisted on the goal. ONU wrapped up the scoring in the 74th minute of the game when junior Ben Tarkany headed in a Bolibrzuch corner kick. The Polar Bears held a 10-5 edge on shots on goal, while the Pioneers led 6-4 on corner kicks. ONU head coach Brent Ridenour was honored before the game as a 2007 inductee to the Ohio Northern Athletics Hall of Fame. “We’d like to thank Marietta for adjusting their schedule and coming here to play for Hall of Fame weekend,” Ridenour said. “I’m proud of my guys today. We really took control in the first half.” Ohio Northern returns to action this Tuesday at 4 p.m. when it hosts Wilmington at the ONU Soccer Field in Ada. |
