ADA — John Carroll used two second-half goals to defeat the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at the ONU Soccer Field.

The Polar Bears drop to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in the OAC with the loss, while the Blue Streaks improve to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.

The loss snaps Ohio Northern’s six-game win streak and marks the first game this season the Polar Bears failed to score a goal.

Alex Bernot had a part in both John Carroll goals.

Bernot took a cross from Jeff Kosek and headed it past ONU freshman keeper David Esser to give the Blue Streaks a 1-0 lead at 67:39.

JCU scored again just 4:57 later when Louis Kastelic scored off a Bernot deflection.

“John Carroll came to play today," ONU head coach Brent Ridenour said. “I give all the credit to John Carroll. They played a great game.”

The Polar Bears held a 17-13 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge on corner kicks.

JCU keeper Matt DeMarchi had four saves and recorded the shutout win.

Esser made three saves for ONU.

Early in the first period senior Nick Farmwald nearly headed in a goal, but JCU’s Kyle Buxman made an outstanding team save to preserve the scoreless tie.

Ohio Northern returns to action this Tuesday when it travels to Tiffin for a 4 p.m. OAC match against Heidelberg at Mayer Field. ONU returns home next Saturday when it hosts Marietta at the ONU Soccer Field at 12:30 p.m.
