ONU men's soccer evens record after 4-1 victory at Defiance |

Sept. 11, 2007 By Zach Stipe DEFIANCE Sophomore Dan Otanicar scored a pair of goals to lead the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Defiance on Tuesday at Riverside Park. The win evened the Polar Bears record to 3-3, while the Yellow Jackets remain winless at 0-4. Defiance struck first, when Benji Hughes chipped a ball over ONU freshman keeper Ben Huntley. Down 1-0, Otanicar and classmate Tyler Johnston worked together to give ONU a 2-1 halftime lead. Otanicar took a through ball from Johnston to tie the game. Johnston later gave ONU the lead after Otanicar returned the favor with a through ball assist of his own. The Polar Bears held a 19-1 shot advantage at halftime, with the Yellow Jackets connecting on their only shot. ONU tacked on two more goals in the second half. Senior Zach Huffman chipped a cross from junior Colin Schroeder for his third goal of the season. ONU’s final goal came when freshman Chet Gapczynski crossed the ball into the box where Huffman headed it to Otanicar for the score. Northern held a 36-5 advantage in shots for the game. Otanicar leads the Polar Bears with five goals and five assists. Ohio Northern returns to action this Friday and Saturday when it hosts the OAC-MIAA Shootout. On Friday, Northern matches up against Calvin (Mich.) at 3 p.m. while Baldwin-Wallace plays Hope (Mich.) at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Calvin (Mich.) faces Baldwin-Wallace at 12:30 p.m. and ONU wraps up the tournament against Hope (Mich.) at 3 p.m. |
