ADA — A strong defensive performance led the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Calvin (Mich.) on Friday during the first game of the OAC-MIAA Shootout at the ONU Soccer Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-3 with the victory, while the loss drops the Knights to 1-3-1.

Northern was able to pick up the win despite Calvin holding a 27-15 advantage on shots.

ONU freshman keeper David Esser made a season-high eight saves to secure his third shutout of the season.

Esser also had the most spectacular play of the game. Calvin’s Jared Litty had a clear shot at the right corner of the net with 31 minutes left in the game, but Esser leapt and swatted the ball away with one hand for the save.

Juniors Ben Tarkany and Geoff Smith came off the bench to score the Polar Bears’ two goals.

Tarkany broke a scoreless tie at the 39:50 mark in the first half with a flying header to the left corner of the net. Sophomore Blair Ellenberger got the assist on the play.

In the second half, Northern increased their lead when junior Geoff Smith finished a Brian Bolibrzuch cross from four yards out for the score at 70:49. Sophomore Tyler Johnston also assisted on the goal.

Calvin held a 9-5 edge on corner kicks.

Knights keeper Luke Panecassio had four saves, but gave up both ONU goals.

“This was the best defensive game we’ve played so far,” head coach Brent Ridenour said. “I’m really pleased with our defense. This was great start to the tournament.”

The OAC-MIAA Shootout wraps up tomorrow. Calvin (Mich.) faces Baldwin-Wallace at 12:30 p.m., while Ohio Northern matches up against Hope (Mich.) at 3 p.m.
