Feb. 2, 2008 By Gary Petit BEREA For the second straight game, five Polar Bears scored in double figures but it came in a losing effort as Baldwin-Wallace took an early lead and never trailed en route to an 82-69 victory over Ohio Northern Saturday afternoon. The win lifts the Yellow Jackets to 7-12 overall, and 4-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Polar Bear men fall to 11-8 on the season and 7-5 in the conference. Senior Kyle Gehle and juniors Kurtis Brown and Mitch Anderson all scored 13 points while fellow junior Jake Cannan chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Kyle Meyer continued to play well for ONU, notching his second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. B-W jumped out to a 16-4 lead just six minutes into the opening stanza. Northern slowly chipped away at the lead the rest of the half, pulling within one at 31-30 at the 3:25 mark. The two teams traded jumpers and a 3-pointer to end the first half with B-W in front 38-35. Sparked by Louis Tumblin’s six points, the Yellow Jackets came out of the locker room on an 8-2 run and opened up a 46-37 lead with 16:52 to play. Two Cannan jumpers followed by two buckets by Kurtis Brown pulled the Polar Bears within three, 50-47, with just under 12 minutes remaining. Over the next eight and a half minutes, the Yellow Jackets went on a 22-9 run to build a 16-point lead Senior Brendan Schuler led the Jackets with a game-high 22 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists. Andrew Bene was 8-of-10 from the floor and scored 20 points. For the game, the Yellow Jackets shot an even 50 percent (28-of-56) from the floor while ONU was just 27-of-74 (36.5 percent). The Polar Bears return to action this Wednesday when they travel to Otterbein for a 7:30 pm tip. Northern will be at home next Saturday to host John Carroll at 3 pm. |
