By Gary Petit DEFIANCE The Ohio Northern men’s golf team claimed its first victory in almost a year Wednesday afternoon at the Defiance Invitational at Kettenring Golf Club. The Polar Bears (37-30-1 overall) carded a 315 on the 6,130-yard, par 71, course. Indiana Tech finished a stroke behind ONU at 316. Tri-State (Ind.) finished third with a 318 and Ohio Dominican took fourth at 319. Senior Chase Cummings and sophomore Paul Morbitzer each carded rounds of 76 to finish in a tie for second. Morbitzer’s round of 38-38 is tied for his lowest round of the year. Cummings also posted a pair of 38s for his second lowest round of the spring. Junior Andrew Rahrig finished tied for sixth with a 41-3778. A year ago at this tournament, Rahrig shot a school-record 4-under par 67. Freshman Phil Makowski fired his career-low round of 40-3979 to finish in a tie for tenth. Junior Kevin Duffy carded an 82 and senior Dan Brodnik posted an 88 to round out the Polar Bear five. Ohio Dominican’s Todd Suman, playing as an individual, took medalist honors with a 37-3774. The win for the Polar Bears was the first since April 20-21, 2007 at the ONU Invitational. The Polar Bears will return to action this weekend, April 12-13, at the Rivergreens G.C. for the OAC Spring Invitational. |
