ADA — Senior defensive back Steve Gunter (Cleveland/Warrensville Heights) accepted a bid to represent Ohio Northern and Team USA in the 2007 Aztec Bowl on Dec. 8 in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Gunter, a senior from Cleveland, was one of the top cover men in the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2007. He finished the year with 37 tackles, two interceptions and four pass break-ups.

The Cleveland native transfered to ONU in 2005 after playing at Toldeo in 2004.

Gunter is the seventh ONU player to receive a bid to compete in the game and will the sixth ONU player to participate in the 11-year history of the event in its current format.

Jason Trusnik (2006), Wes Hostetler (2005), Steve Vagedes (1999), Nate Riles (1998) and Charles Glover (1997) all competed for Team USA in the game. Jamal Robertson (2000) received a bid but did not play in the game.

The Aztec Bowl pits a team of 50 NCAA Division III seniors from 50 different schools against a team of Mexican Collegiate all-stars at various sites throughout Mexico.

Team USA has won nine of the ten games played in the current format, including a 28-7 victory last year in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

ONU’s Wes Hostetler was the MVP of the game in 2005, scoring on a 90-yard kickoff return, a 75-yard interception return and a 54-yard punt return.
