CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Junior David Penny finished among the top 16 wrestlers in the 125-pound weight class with a 1-2 record Friday at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at U.S. Cellular Arena.

Penny (29-10) posted a 7-4 victory over Jerrod Hoxie of Heidelberg in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket early Friday evening, but was was eliminated just one win shy of earning All-America honors with a 7-1 loss to No. 7 seeded Munkhbaatar Baatar of St. John's (Minn.) late Friday night in the consolation semifinals.

Against Hoxie, Penny got a takedown and a 3-point near fall in the first 30 seconds to take a very quick 5-0 lead and made it hold up.

His first-period nescape was not enough to overcome three Baatar take downs in the decision.

Senior Ben Plowman (22-10) was eliminated from the Consolation bracket at 174 pounds by Kyle Kehrli (32-10) of Cornell (Iowa) by an 11-1 count Friday evening.

Both men were downed in their first round contests Friday afternoon.

Plowman lost by fall to defending national champion and top-seeded Josh Chelf (36-3) of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1:45 in his first round contest.

Penny fell to No. 5-seed Seth Flodeen (21-7) of Augsburg (Minn.) by a 14-0 major decision.

"This was a disappointing end to terrific seasons by these two men," ONU head coach Ron Beaschler said. "Ben has been here three straight years, which is very impressive. Only six other ONU wrestlers have won three OAC titles. David has one more year to work hard, continue to improve and get back here."

Penny's contest with Hoxie was a rematch of the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship finals from two weeks ago. The two wrestlers had split two meetings this season, with Penny winning at the ONU Invitational in Decmeber and Hoxie winning at the OACs.

The top eight placers in each weight class earn All-America honors. Friday evening's session will pair each of the 10 double-elimination weight classes down to the final eight - four in the championship bracket and four in the consolation bracket.

Saturday's morning session will determine places 3-8 and Saturday night's session will be the 10 championship matches.

Plowman was making his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, receiving bids each of the past three years as an OAC Champion. He was an 184-pounder as a sophomore in 2006 and has wrestled at 174 pounds each of the past two years.

Penny is making his second consecutive trip to the NCAAs at 125 pounds. He was the OAC Champion as a sophomore in 2007 and received the league's lone at-large bid this year.
