CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind — Freshman Nick Hoopes, junior Drew Michel and senior and No. 8-ranked Ben Plowman each went undefeated as the Ohio Northern wrestling team posted a 3-1 record at the Monon Bell Classic hosted by Wabash University on Saturday.

The Polar Bears (8-8) got off to a quick start defeating Millikin (Ill.) 57-0 and Wabash (Ind.) 37-10 before losing to the University of Indianapolis (Ind.) 24-18. Northern ended the day with a 42-3 victory against Tri-State University (Ind.).

Plowman continued his hot streak going 4-0 at the Monon Bell Classic including his first pin of the year against Dave Waple of the University of Indianapolis. Plowman improves his record to 15-6.

Hoopes impressed all day, going a perfect 5-0 with decisions against the University of Indianapolis, Tri-State University and in exhibition.

Michel won all four of his matches today including his second pin of the year against Wabash’s Brandon Johnson.

Senior Dave Penny improved to 21-3 on the season winning all three of his matches and collected a technical fall against Keith Closson of Wabash.

Freshman Jeff Sommers was one of three ONU wrestlers to earn two pins Saturday. Sommers went 3-1 at the Classic and collected pins against Jared Tribbet of Wabash and Matt Murray Tri-State University.

Freshman Jason VanAtta won by pin in both matches he wrestled today to improve to 6-5 on the year. Freshman Drew Swick was the third Polar Bear to collect two pins Saturday pinning Cass Settlemyre of Tri-State University and Wabash’s James Fitzpatrick on his way to a 3-2 record on the day.

Sophomore Jeff Penny also went 3-2 on the day with a pin over Steve Iles of Wabash.

Freshman Luke Miller earned his team-leading 23rd victory this year going 3-1 Saturday. Miller’s only loss was a 4-3 double-overtime defeat against Mike Horton of the University of Indianapolis.

Freshman Leon Allen went 3-2 in the Classic and collected a pin against Ryan Lineberry of Tri-State University Saturday.

As a team the Polar Bears earned an impressive 10 pins Saturday and one technical fall.

The Polar Bears return to action Tuesday when they travel to Mount Union for a 7:30 pm matchup.
