Head Coach Ron Beaschler

Ron Beaschler is in his 20th season as head wrestling coach at ONU after taking over the reins during the 1988-89 campaign.

Beaschler is currently serving as the chairperson of the Department of Human Performance and Sport Sciences. He also is an assistant professor in the health and physical education department and coordinates the sport management program at Ohio Northern.

Beaschler is currently serving as the Weight Management Program liaison to the NCAA Wrestling Committee.

He also served as chair of Division III NCAA Wrestling committee for two years, was the president of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), which represents all collegiate and scholastic wrestling in the United States and was the Division III representative on the National Wrestling Coaches Association executive board of directors.

He was inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame on march 7, 2008.

In his 19 seasons at the helm of the ONU wrestling program, Beaschler’s teams have posted a 183-146-4 record. Beaschler enters the 2007-08 season as the all-time winningest coach in ONU history. He also has the longest tenure as head wrestling coach at ONU.

During his time at ONU, Beaschler has coached two National Champions, two National Runners-up, 13 All-Americans, 27 Scholar All-Americans and five Scholar All-American Teams.

He was named OAC Coach of the Year by his peers in 1993.

Education: Beaschler graduated from ONU in 1986 with bachelors degrees in management and sports management. He received his masters degree in education from Bowling Green State University in 1988 and is currently working on his Ph.D. at the University of Toledo.

Ron resides in Ada with this wife, Christy, and their sons John, Christopher and Zachary.

Nathan Shearer is in his third season as an assistant coach at Ohio Northern.

Nathan completed his bachelor’s degree in social studies from Ohio Northern.

Shearer was a four-year letter winner for the Polar Bear wrestling program from 2002-05, amassing 89 total wins in his career.

He won an Ohio Athletic Conference championship at 133 pounds and competed at the NCAA III National Championships as a freshman in 2002.

Nathan’s career winning percentage of .669 (89-44) ranks him 10th all-time in ONU wrestling history. His 126 takedowns during the 2004-05 season rank third all-time on ONU’s single-season list.

Shearer also compiled a 19-3 combined record in OAC duals during his four seasons as a Polar Bear. He was a member of two OAC regular season championship teams, in 2004 and 2005.

Nathan currently resides in Ada.

Derek Ankney begins his second season on the coaching staff after a highly successful career at John Carroll University, where he garnered All-American status by placing 5th at the 285-pound weight class in 2004.

While wrestling in the Ohio Athletic Conference, Derek wrestled nearly flawless in regular season and tournament competitions, recording only a single OAC loss.

Derek was also a member of two OAC championship teams at JCU.

Derek was a two time NCAA qualifier and two time recipient of the John Carroll Outstanding Wrestler Award.

He brings his mat experience to the upper weight classes this season for the Polar Bears.

Derek is currently working on his teaching licensure in History at Urbana University.

He currently resides in Sidney, Ohio.

Assistant Coach John Bohren

John (Yanni) Bohren is in his first season as assistant coach for the ONU wrestling program.

Bohren comes to ONU after wrestling three years at The Citadel, where he was a lettermen all three years.

He wrestled at 184-pounds and was part of the SoCon Championship team during his senior year.

The Summerville, SC native, was a state high school champion and is in his first year at the Pettit College of Law at ONU.
